Sports speculators are gearing up for this Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, the last of the annual Triple Crown of thoroughbred horse races. Like any high-risk, high-stakes activity, horse racing draws its fair share of the super-rich, and not just those looking to make a few bucks betting on likely contenders. Some of the power players on the Forbes Billionaires list own and breed thoroughbreds, attending bloodstock auctions to select future winners and becoming familiar figures behind the scenes at both stud farms and race tracks.

The ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is perhaps the best known billionaire in the world of thoroughbred horse breeding and racing. His presence at horse auctions is met with hushed reverence — and an intimidating team of bodyguards. Known simply as ‘Sheikh Mohammed’ in racing circles, he is thought to be the biggest spender in the history of the sport, buying up stables in the Middle East, Europe and the U.S. Four horses linked to the Sheikh’s various stables have won the UK’s Epsom Derby: Lammtarra, New Approach, High-Rise and Shaamit. He has yet to win a Kentucky Derby, but continues to chase that goal.

In the U.S., Excel Communications founder Kenny Troutt is the most high-profile billionaire in the horse racing game thanks to an incredible year in 2010. His colt Super Saver won the Kentucky Derby and his stallion Drosselmeyer nabbed the Belmont Stakes. Troutt owns Winstar Farm in Versailles, Kentucky.

France’s Alain Wertheimer and his brother Gerard, co-owners of fashion house Chanel, are third generation horse owners and breeders. Their thoroughbred business Wertheimer et Frere (meaning Wertheimer and Brother) has produced champs like Goldikova, the only horse ever to win three Breeders’ Cup Mile races. In 1993, their horse Kotashaan won American Horse of the Year, one of the sport’s highest accolades.

Mary Alice Dorrance Malone, one of the heiresses to the Campbell Soup fortune, runs Pennsylvania’s Iron Spring Farm. Over the past three decades, she’s imported stallions from Germany, Poland and the Netherlands for breeding purposes, and it’s paid off: her horse Judgement is the most successful American-bred jumper ever, earning over $1.5 million in prize money.

Malone’s cousin and fellow Campbell Soup heiress Charlotte Colket Weber also runs a stud farm: Live Oak, in the thoroughbred town of Ocala, Florida. Her most successful horses include Miesque’s Approval, winner of the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs in 2006. On her website, Weber notes that two of her top horses, half-brothers Solar Splendor and Sultry Song, both won races on the same day in 1992 at New York’s Belmont Park.

Billionaire founder of storage giant Public Storage Bradley Hughes owns Lexington, Kentucky’s Spendthrift Farm. The stable has been home to winners of every Triple Crown race, including 9 Kentucky Derby victors. Hughes is a familiar and well-liked figure on the thoroughbred circuit, attending many sales himself to bid on the best bloodstock.

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair had an impressive breeding and racing career before selling his massive Kentucky-based Stonerside Stable to Dubai’s royal family, including Sheikh Mohammed, in 2008. The sale was said to include more than 80 racehorses and 170 broodmares. In the 1990s, a colt he co-owned, Strodes Creek, placed second in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Belmont Stakes.

Low-profile Brazilian banker Julio Bozano is a devout thoroughbred horse owner, and reportedly keeps 300 mares at several farms in Argentina, Florida and Kentucky. Some of his race-winning thoroughbreds include Quite a Bride, Pommes Frites, Palladio and Quelle Surprise.

Walter Haefner is one of Switzerland’s richest men, and the largest individual shareholder of IT giant CA (Computer Associates). His Moyglare Stud Farm in Ireland boasts a number of major race-winners, including Go And Go, who won the Belmont Stakes in 1990. Now 100 years old, Haefner has since transferred ownership of Moyglare to his daughter.

One of the heiresses to the $14 billion Tetra Laval packaging fortune, Swedish billionaire Kirsten Rausing runs Lanwades Stud in Newmarket, England. On her website, she says her team has bred and raised winners of more than 795 races since 1999.

Texan banker Gerald J. Ford owns Diamond A Farms in Kentucky. His thoroughbred Pleasantly Perfect is the fourth richest American horse in terms of career earnings, bringing in over $7.8 million. Big wins have included the 2003 Breeders’ Cup Classic and the 2004 Dubai World Cup.

Australian retail magnate Gerald Harvey now owns 100% of Magic Millions, a thoroughbred auction house on Australia’s Gold Coast, having bought out his business partners earlier this year. He personally owns some 1,000 horses at the Vinery, Baramul and Broombee stud farms in New South Wales and recently bought two New Zealand stables in an effort to break into the Kiwi thoroughbred business.

Canadian billionaire Frank Stronach owns Magna International, North America’s largest racetrack operator. He’s in the horse racing game himself: his Stronach Stables has produced winners of the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes, and his horse Ghostzapper won the coveted Breeder’s Cup Classic in 2004.

Sadly, one of the most beloved figures in the U.S. horse racing scene passed away earlier this year. California billionaire winemaker Jess Jackson was a regular fixture at bloodstock auctions and racetracks. Last year, I spent three days in Saratoga Springs shadowing Jackson’s thoroughbred agent for a Forbes story. It was clear he’d earned the respect of his peers as an owner and a breeder. His Stonestreet Farms stable is home to Curlin, the all-time top earning racehorse in North America with over $10.5 million winnings, and Rachel Alexandra, the first filly to win the Preakness Stakes in 85 years and 2009 Horse of the Year.

    신성장 동력 말산업 .7] 미국 켄터키주

    영국 엘리자베스 여왕이 관전하기 위해 찾는다는 미국 최고의 경마대회인 ‘켄터키 더비(Kentucky Derby)’의 무대로 유명한 켄터키주는 미국에서 가장 우수한 말을 생산하는 지역이다. 그 비결은 석회석 지반 덕분에 칼슘 성분이 많아 말 사료로 가장 적합한 목초인 블루그래스(Bluegrass) 덕분이다. 이 때문에 말산업은 켄터키주의 핵심적인 수입원이다. 미국 농업센서스에 따르면 2005년 켄터키주의 말산업은 10억달러의 현금수입을 올렸으며, 농업분야 총수입의 25%를 차지했다. 10만개 안팎의 직·간접적인 일자리도 창출했다. 이 때문에 켄터키주의 말산업은 연간 88억달러의 경제유발효과를 내고 있다. 이 가운데 ‘켄터키 말공원(Kentucky Horse Park)’은 연간 2억4천만달러, 켄터키 더비는 2억2천만달러의 경제유발효과를 각각 거두는 것으로 알려져 있다.

    말공원·경마장·종마농장 등 관람객 흥미

    경마장 건립 후 28년만에 흑자 ‘켄터키 더비’

    종합적 계획·추진…2억2천만弗 경제유발 효과

    ◆‘켄터키 말공원’ 등으로 이름난 렉싱턴

    렉싱턴에는 플로리다주 오칼라처럼 도시 전체가 말과 관련됐다는 느낌을 줄 정도로 말 관련시설이 산재해 있다. 렉싱턴공항에서부터 여행객은 말 조형물과 켄터키 말공원을 비롯한 말과 관련된 각종 시설을 알리는 홍보물을 접하게 된다. 이 공항의 이름은 블루글래스의 이름을 그대로 따서 ‘블루글래스 에어포트’다. 미국의 말과 관련한 대부분 기관은 이곳에 있다. 그래서 렉싱턴은 ‘세계의 말 수도(Horse Capital of the World)’란 애칭으로 불리기도 한다. 렉싱턴 외곽순환고속도로에는 켄터키 출신으로 주요 경마대회에서 21전20승의 기록을 남긴 ‘맨 오워’란 말의 이름을 붙여 놓았다. 렉싱턴에서 해야 할 10가지 일을 소개한 여행안내서도 1·2·3번째 모두 말과 관련된 일을 추천한다. 첫번째가 켄터키 말공원, 두번째가 키니랜드 경마장, 세번째가 말농장 투어다.

    켄터키 말공원은 부지 417만6천500㎡(126만5천600평)에 자리잡고 있으며, 공원을 둘러싼 울타리의 길이만 5만4천m에 이른다. 두 개의 박물관과 역대 우승 경주마가 있는 명예의 전당, 말 사육장, 교육 테마파크, 말 스포츠센터, 승마코스, 말 캠핑장 등을 다양하게 갖추고 있다. 특히 세계 말박물관에는 사냥·교통·전쟁·스포츠 분야에서 활약한 말의 역사를 알 수 있는 모형 등 전시물을 비롯해 각종 경마대회 우승트로피와 말 관련 예술품 등이 전시돼 있다.

    또 말 퍼레이드와 승마체험, 마차타기, 경기시범 등 각종 이벤트도 열려 관람객에게 흥미를 더해 주고 있다. 퍼레이드장에서는 아랍말·인디언말·유럽말의 시범이 시간대별로 이어진다. 계절마다 말과 관련된 쇼와 폴로경기 등이 열린다. 기념품가게에서는 말을 이미지로 한 모자·목걸이·귀고리·셔츠·컵 등 다양한 상품을 판매한다. 이와 함께 주민들이 결혼식장으로 이용하는 등 지역사회와 함께하는 공원으로 유명하며, 켄터키 말위원회와 경마협회 등 말산업과 관련된 기관도 이곳에 사무실을 두고 있다.

    렉싱턴은 종마농장으로도 유명하다. 특히 두바이 지도자인 셰이크 모하메드가 1981년 설립한 ‘달리(Darley)’가 대표적인 종마농장이다. 북미·호주·유럽·일본에까지 세력을 뻗치고 있는 달리목장의 종마와 관련된 소식은 언제나 뉴스거리가 될 정도다. 이 곳에서 사육되는 서러브래드(Thoroughbred) 종마 60여마리는 두바이월드컵 경마대회에서 우승한 경주마를 비롯해 전세계적인 경마대회에서 입상한 종마다.

    이 때문에 달리 목장의 종부료, 즉 교미비용도 만만찮다. 암말이 임신될 때 지불하는 방식을 택한 달리 목장의 종부료는 1만달러부터 7만5천달러에 이르기까지 다양하다. 현재 7만5천달러를 받는 ‘베르나르디니’는 3세마로 경마대회에 8번 출전해 6번 우승, 1번 준우승을 차지한 말이다. 이처럼 종부료가 비싸기 때문에 달리 목장에서는 한 시즌에 한 번 있는 암말의 발정기에 한 번의 교미로 임신이 성사될 수 있도록 전담 수의사를 배치하는 등 임신 성공률을 높이는데 신경을 쓴다.

    ◆루이빌 ‘켄터키 더비’, 28년 뒤에 흑자

    켄터키 더비는 1875년 시작된 미국의 유서 깊은 경마대회다. 매년 5월 첫째 토요일, 렉싱턴에서 110㎞ 정도 떨어진 루이빌의 처칠다운스 경마장에서 열린다. 켄터키주의 목축업이 쇠퇴하자, 이를 보완하기 위해 경마를 도입한 것이라고 한다. 켄터키 더비는 이미 형성돼 있던 말산업을 기반으로 했기 때문에 주민들의 반발을 사지 않고 추진될 수 있었다. 켄터키 더비를 정점으로 하는 켄터키주의 말산업은 역사성과 주민들의 관심을 연계시킴으로써 성공을 거둔 것으로 평가되고 있다.

    하지만 켄터키 더비가 흑자로 전환되기까지는 적지 않은 시간이 필요했다. 지금은 세계적인 경마대회로 자리매김돼 지역발전에 기여하고 있지만, 경마장을 건립한 지 28년이 지난 뒤에야 트랙 건설에 투자된 초기비용을 처음으로 회수했다고 한다. 이는 말산업 전반에 시사하는 바가 크다. 경마와 승마를 포함한 말산업 자체가 트랙 건설비와 말 구입비 등 기본적인 비용을 요구하기 때문에 장기적인 관점에서 종합적인 계획을 세우고 추진돼야 할 산업이란 사실을 알려준다.

    켄터키주의 말산업 진흥정책이 이를 보여주고 있다. 켄터키 더비가 처음 열린 뒤 말과 관련된 각종 프로그램이 산·학·연·관의 연계로 추진된 덕분에 현재 말산업 클러스터 형태로 발전됐다. 이와 함께 다른 산업과의 연계도 시도했다. 켄터키 더비의 경우 1907년 켄터키주 박람회를 개최하면서 경마장에서 자동차경주가 열린 뒤 2년마다 자동차경주가 벌어지는 것도 다른 산업과의 연계를 통해 활용도를 높인 사례다.

    켄터키주립대 트로에드슨 교수(수의학과)는 “명품 화장품을 생산하는 것으로 유명한 엘리자베스 아덴이 몇해전 숨지면서 켄터키주립대에 연구용 농장을 기증할 정도로 미국은 말산업을 육성하기 위한 사회적 분위기가 형성돼 있다”면서 “말산업을 시작하는 한국으로서는 한국에 적합한 말을 육종하는 것이 우선 필요하다”고 말했다. 그는 또 “중국이 말산업에 본격적으로 뛰어들었다. 집중적인 투자로 10년 이내에 말산업 선진국을 따라잡을 것으로 보인다”고 귀띔했다.

    두바이의 천지개벽 지휘자, 세이크 모하메드
    세계 최고가 아니면 하지도 않는다

    세계 8대 불가사의로 새롭게 꼽히고 있는 ‘두바이(Dubai)’의 천지개벽

    두바이는 UAE(아랍에미리트연방국)를 구성하고 있는 7개 부족 국가 중 하나이다. 지금 두바이는 전 세계의 이목을 집중시키는 대형 프로젝트를 진행 중이다. 세계 유일의 칠성(七星) 호텔인 ‘버즈 알 아랍(Burj Al Arab)’, 높이만 800M에 이르는 세계 최고층 건물 ‘버즈 두바이(Burj Dubai)’, 바다를 메워 만든 인공섬 시리즈 ‘팜 아일랜드(Palm Island)', 세계 지도를 그대로 바다 위에 옮긴 섬 ’더 월드(The World)‘..... 지금 두바이는 그야말로 하늘과 땅이 새로 만들어지는 천지창조의 과정을 매일 겪고 있다.

    이외에도 해저 호텔 ‘하이드로 폴리스(Hydropolis)', 미국 디즈니랜드의 8배 크기인 ’두바이 랜드(Dubai Land)', 연 7천만명의 이용객을 수용하는 ‘두바이 인터내셔널 에어포트(Dubai International Airport)', 총 150만평의 부지에 각종 스포츠 경기장을 모은 ’두바이 스포츠 시티(Dubai Sports City)' 등등 두바이에서 추진 중인 프로젝트는 하나하나가 경이로움 그 자체이다.



    이러한 두바이의 변신을 진두지휘하고 있는 사람은 바로 UAE의 총리이자 부통령이며, 두바이의 국왕인 ‘세이크 모하메드 빈 라시드 알 막툼(Sheikh Mohammed bin Rasid Al Maktoum)’이다. 미국의 ‘Time지(紙)’가 선정한 ‘세계의 영향력 있는 100대 인물’ 중 한 명인 ‘세이크 모하메드’는 왕세자 시절부터 두바이의 개혁을 치밀하게 준비해 왔다. 막대한 양의 오일 달러를 무기로 꿈에도 감히 상상하지 못했던 대형 프로젝트를 거칠 것 없이 실현시키며 두바이를 새롭게 창조해 나가고 있다. 물론 왕에 대한 국민의 절대적인 복종과 천문학적인 재산, 그리고 탁월한 판단력과 리더쉽이 있기에 가능한 일이다.

    ‘세이크 모하메드’는 세계 경마계에서도 큰 손으로 유명하다. 스포츠광이기도 한 그는 경마를 너무나 좋아해서 본인이 직접 기수가 되어 경마대회에 출전하기도 했다(부인인 요르단의 ‘하야(Haya)' 공주 역시 경마와 승마 매니아라고 한다). 어릴 적 영국에서 유학했던 ‘세이크 모하메드’는 장차 외교력 강화를 위해서는 유럽 고위층과 친분을 맺는 것이 중요하다고 판단, 1977년 영국의 마주가 된다. 마주가 되어 유럽 각국의 최고위층 지도자들과 인맥을다져 세계무대에 나서기 위해서였다. .


    약 30여년에 걸친 경마에 대한 대대적인 투자는 오늘날 ‘세이크 모하메드’ 본인은 물론 조국인 두바이를 전 세계에 확실히 각인시킨 계기가 되었다. 다양한 경마 분야에서 ‘세이크 모하메드’는 엄청난 영향력을 발휘하고 있는데, 우선 그가 운영하고 있는 ‘고돌핀 레이싱 오퍼레이션(Godolphin Racing Operation)’이라는 일종의 경주마 회사를 예를 들면, 이 회사는 세계 각국의 경매시장에서 전도유망한 2살짜리 망아지를 사들인 후, 겨울 동안 두바이의 ‘알 쿼즈(Al Quoz)' 목장에서 훈련을 시킨다. 이 중에서 가장 뛰어난 경주마를 골라 이듬해 봄부터 영국과 프랑스, 독일, 미국 등 경마 선진국의 주요 대회에 출전시킨다. 현재까지 11개 나라의 129개 GI 등급 경주에서 우승한 것을 비롯해 13년 동안 총 409개의 경주에서 우승을 차지했을 정도로 ’고돌핀 레이싱 오퍼레이션‘의 실력은 막강하다. 올해에도 132마리의 경주마가 292개의 경주에 출전해 93승이나 거뒀으며, 상금으로만 무려 1,000만 달러를 넘게 벌었다.


    전 세계 각국에 8개의 대형 경주마 목장을 소유한 ‘세이크 모하메드’는 또한 ‘달리 스탤리언 오퍼레이션(Darley Stallion Operation)'이라는 씨수말 회사도 소유하고 있다. 우수한 경주마를 키우는 것에서 그치지 않고 직접 유명 씨수말을 보유하여 혈통 좋은 경주마를 생산해 내겠다는 셈이다. 현재 영국과 아일랜드, 프랑스, 미국, 호주, 일본 등 7개 나라에서 52마리의 ’달리 스탤리언 오퍼레이션‘ 소속 씨수말들이 활동 중이다. 2004년 미국을 감동으로 몰아넣었던 ’스마티 존스‘의 부마인 ’일루시브 퀄리티(Elusive Quality, 교배료 10만 달러)‘를 비롯해, 2003년 ’두바이 월드컵‘ 우승마 ’문 발라드(Moon Ballad, 교배료 3백엔)‘, 올해 은퇴한 2005년 ’브리더스 컵 터프‘ 우승마 ’쉬로코(Shirocco) 등등 이름만으로도 쟁쟁한 씨수말들이다


    세계 경주마 경매 시장에서도 ‘세이크 모하메드’의 악명(?)은 유명하다. 일단 가능성이 보이면 금액에 상관없이 거금을 아낌없이 투자하기 때문이다. 지난 9월에 미국에서 열린 ‘킨랜드 이얼링(Keenland yearling)' 경매에서는 단 하루 동안 9마리의 경주마를 구입하면서 무려 2,700만 달러를 쓰기도 했다. 올해 2월 역대 최고가인 1,600만 달러에 팔린 ‘그린 몽키(Green Monkey)'라는 2살짜리 망아지도 사실 ’세이크 모하메드‘가 입찰에 나섰다가 포기하는 바람에 가격이 천정부지로 솟았다고 한다. 그런데 ’그린 몽키‘가 부상으로 인해 경주 데뷔가 늦어질 수 있다고 하니, ’세이크 모하메드‘에게는 운까지 따랐다.


    경마에 대한 ‘세이크 모하메드’의 사랑. 바로 세계 최고의 상금이 걸린 ‘두바이 월드컵’ 경마대회를 창설하였다. 외국의 유명 경마대회에서 우승하고, 우수한 씨수말을 보유하고, 경주마 경매 시장을 좌우하는 것에 만족하지 않고, 아예 두바이를 세계 경마의 중심지로 만들어버리겠다는 야심인 셈이다. 이슬람 국가인 탓에 전혀 베팅을 할 수 없지만, ‘두바이 월드컵 클래식(Dubai Worldcup Classic)’이라는 경주에만 600만 달러의 상금이 걸리는 등, 총상금 1,500만 달러가 넘는 ‘두바이 월드컵’은 전 세계 경마 관계자에게 초미의 관심사가 되곤 한다. 물론 세계 유명 인사들이 이 대회를 관전하기 위해 몰려드는 탓에 두바이의 지명도가 높아지고 관광 수입이 늘어나는 것은 물론이다.

    다양한 분야에서 세계를 경악시키고 있는 ‘세이크 모하메드’의 목표는 무엇일까? 역시 조국인 두바이와 UAE의 무궁한 번영일 것이다. 두바이를 세계 최고의 허브 도시로 발전시키기 위해 세계 최고가 아니면 시도하지도 않는다는 ‘세이크 모하메드’에게 말에 대한 사랑도 역시 세계 최고인가 보다. 시인이기도 한 ‘세이크 모하메드’는 말에 대한 사랑을 이렇게 읊었다.


    My love for horses seems unremarkable to me

    It is part of my blood, my soul and my history

    This love originate in this land


    내게 말에 대한 사랑은 특별하지 않습니다

    왜냐하면 말은 내 피와 영혼과 역사의 일부니까요

    그리고 그 사랑은 이 땅, 두바이에서 시작됐습니다




    천지개벽의 총 지휘자, 세이크 모하메드=두바이의 천지개벽은 세이크 라시드가 시작했지만 그 정점에는 현 왕세자 세이크 모하메드가 있다. 모하메드는 두바이의 정치, 경제, 산업, 관광을 아우르는 총 지휘자다. 그는 실질적으로 두바이를 쥐락펴락하고 있다.


    영국의 군사학교를 졸업한 모하메드는 인공섬과 인터넷시티 등 두바이 개발사업의 각종 아이디어를 직접 내놓는가하면 자신이 소유하고 있는 땅을 기증해 천지개벽을 일궈냈다.


    두바이의 천지개벽은 존경받는 왕권정치가 계속되고 있기 때문에 가능했다. 두바이는 모든 토지가 국왕 소유로 엄청난 개발에도 불구, 민원과 보상으로 골치를 썩는 일이 없다. 모하메드의 의지만 있다면 어떤 지역도, 어떤 규모로든 개발할 수 있다. 모하메드는 그러나 자신의 권력을 남용하지 않고 극대화시킨 위대한 지도자다.


    세이크 모하메드는 각계 전문가 2000여명으로 구성된 씽크탱크를 직속으로 활용하고 있다고 한다. 그는 이를 통해 두바이 개발과 관련된 각종 사안들을 빛의 속도에 비유될 정도로 빠른 속도로 결정한다고 한다.


    두바이 참관단 일원인 이형승 CJ경영연구소 소장은 "팜 아일랜드와 같이 세계에서 전례를 찾아볼 수 없는 대규모 개발사업을 철저한 수지분석을 바탕으로 이처럼 빠른 속도로 밀어붙일 수 있는 것은 모하메드의 지도력이 어느 정도 내공을 갖췄는지 입증해준다"며 "아버지 라시드의 비전을 허상이 아닌 실상으로 만든 강한 추진력도 돋보인다"고 말했다.


    세이크 모하메드와 씽크탱크가 두바이 개발에 얼마나 치밀한 지 단적으로 보여주는 사례가 있다. 두바이는 대형 개발사업을 추진할 때 민간 디벨로퍼에게 99년 임대조건으로 토지를 판다고 한다.


    이때 땅값을 계산하는 방식이 독특하다. 표면적인 땅값은 250만원 안팎으로 불모지를 바꾼 땅값 치고는 그다지 비싸지 않다. 그러나 실제 계약서상의 땅값은 여기에 해당 지역 용적률을 곱해 산출한다. 평당 250만원인 땅값에 용적률 600%만 적용해도 평당 땅값은 1500만원을 훌쩍 넘는다.


    사업시행자가 얼마나 치밀하고, 철저하게 개발을 추진하는지 잘 보여주는 대목이다. 두바이 최대 부동산 개발회사인 엠마와 낙힐의 실질적 소유주는 세이크 모하메드다.



    두바이는 어떤 나라?


    두바이는 1971년 영국에서 돌립한 아랍에미레이트(UAE)에 속한 7개 부족국가 중 하나다. 인구 수는 160만~170만명(UAE 전체 인구 수는 460만명)이며, 이 중 80% 외국인 노동자다.


    두바이 정부는 향후 5년간 전체 인구수를 500만명까지 늘리겠다는 야심찬 목표를 세워 놓고 있다. 조상은 사막 생활을 해온 베두윈족이다.


    석유가 나오기 전만 해도 사우디아라비아로부터 경제 원조를 받았으며, 이곳 현지인들은 돈을 벌기 위해 인도 등으로 나갔다. 지난 76년 처음 석유가 발견되면서 주요 산유국 중 하나로 급부상했다.


    당시 두바이를 이끌었던 세이크 알시드는 2010년 석유 매장량이 바닥날 것으로 예측하고, 이 때부터 석유 의존도를 낮추기 위한 대대적인 프로젝트를 벌인다.


    그는 4년간 공사 통해 79년 세계 최대 크기의 인공 무역항인 '제벨 알리항'을 건설한다. 현재 두바이를 통해 한해 45만대의 콘테이너가 오가고 있다. 또 85년에는 항구 안쪽에 중동 지역 최초로 여의도 10배 크기의 자유무역지대를 만든다.


    100% 외국인 소유권 인정과 무법인세,무제한 해외 송금 등을 파격적인 혜택을 내세워 현재 3천여 해외 기업이 이곳에 입주해 있다.


    이어 수년전부터 2단계로 유럽, 아시아, 아프리카 등을 연결하는 허브 도시로 조성하는 대규모 프로젝트를 추진하고 있다. 이건희 회장이 창조적 경영자로 주목한 모하메드 왕이 이 과정을 주도해 왔다

    해외 말 산업 규모와 유명 말 사업가

    세계적으로 앞선 말 산업 국가는 미국과 유럽의 일부 국가, 신대륙 호주를 들 수 있다. 이 중 말 산업이 가장 발달한 나라는 카우보이의 나라 미국이다. 미국의 말 산업은 승마와 경마를 비롯해 농업용과 로데오, 폴로경기용, 경찰용, 비공식 마술대회 등 다양하다.

    2005년 기준으로 미국에서 사육 중인 말은 920만 두에 이르며, 이 중 경마용이 가장 많고 마술쇼용과 레크리에이션용 등의 순이다. 말 산업에 참여하는 인구는 약 460만 명이며 이 중 200여만 명이 말을 소유한 것으로 조사된다.

    말 산업의 경제기여도는 직접적인 효과가 388억 달러, 기여효과까지 감안하면 약 1015달러로 미국 국내총생산(GDP)의 약 0.81%를 차지한다. 경마의 종가인 영국은 경마, 승마와 더불어 말 생산, 트래킹, 사냥, 말 쇼 등의 산업이 있다.

    2005년 기준으로 영국의 말 사육두수는 100만 두에 조금 못 미치며, 승마 인구가 약 240만 명이다. 경제적인 기여효과는 약 57억8000만 달러로 GDP의 약 0.26%를 차지한다.

    호주는 말 사육두수가 120만 두에 달하는데 이 중 40만 두가 야생마다. 이밖에 경주마 최대 생산국답게 농업용 말과 함께 씨암말과 씨수말이 많다. 1999년 기준 말 산업의 경제기여효과는 63억 달러로, 당시 호주 GDP의 약 1.5%를 차지할 정도로 비중이 높다.

    세계적 축제인 경마대회와 그 역사

    적지 않은 경제적인 효과를 내고 있는 말 산업은 주로 경마와 승마를 중심으로 발달했다. 이 중 산업 기여도도 크고 대중적으로도 인기가 높은 것이 경마다. 경마는 레이스라는 스포츠와 베팅이라는 오락적 요소가 결합된 레포츠로 어느 정도 과학적으로 예측한 결과와 우연이라는 이변이 조화를 이룬 레저다.

    해외에서는 경마를 왕들이 즐기는 운동이라는 의미로 ‘Sports of Kings’라고 부르기도 하고, 스포츠의 왕이라는 뜻으로 ‘King of Sports’라 부르기도 한다.

    유럽에서는 한때 경마장이 사회적으로 유력한 인사들의 고급 사교장 역할을 해왔다. 그러나 지금은 많이 대중화돼 오래된 유명 경주가 열리는 날이면 나라 전체가 들썩이는 대규모 축제로 자리 잡았다.

    세계 최대 경주마 생산국인 호주의 대표적인 경주인 멜버른컵이 그중 하나다. 1861년 첫 대회를 치른 멜버른컵은 제2차 세계대전 기간을 포함해 단 한해도 거른 적이 없다. 현재 호주 최대 축제인 동시에 대표적인 관광자원으로 자리 잡았다.

    멜버른컵은 매년 11월 첫째 화요일에 멜버른 플레밍턴 경마장에서 열린다. 대회 당일에는 경마장에만 10만~15만 명의 관객이 몰려들고, 세계 30여 개국에 생중계돼 7억 명이 10분의 짜릿한 순간을 즐긴다.

    경마의 종가라 불리는 영국에서는 매년 왕실 소유의 경마장에서 대규모 축제가 열리는데, 그중에서도 왕실 소유의 로열 에스코트 경마장에서 열리는 에스코트 레이스는 영국 왕실이 주최하는 경기로 경마가 열리는 나흘 동안 여왕과 왕실 가족이 마차로 장내를 행진하는 ‘팬서비스’를 해 더욱 유명해진 경주다.

    두바이 월드컵 또한 미국의 브리더스컵데이와 켄터키더비, 호주의 멜버른컵 등과 더불어 세계에서 가장 유명한 경마대회 중 하나다. 1996년 아랍에미리트의 왕자이자 국방부 장관인 셰이크 모하메드가 창설했다. 짧은 역사에 비해 가장 유명한 경마대회로 손꼽히는 이유는 총상금이 600만 달러로 단일 경주로는 세계에서 상금이 가장 많기 때문이다.

    세계 최대 말 산업 국가 미국에는 트리플 크라운(triple crown)이 있다. 트리플 크라운은 1930년 미국의 경주마인 갤런트 폭스(Gallant Fox)가 3대 경마 레이스인 켄터키더비, 벨몬트 스테이크스, 프리크니스 스테이크스 대회에서 우승하고, 갤런트 폭스의 새끼인 오하마가 1935년 다시 3대 경마 경주에서 우승하면서 유래된 말이다.

    당시 한 스포츠 기자가 이를 트리플 크라운으로 소개했는데, 이 말이 화제가 되면서 미국에서 가장 권위 있는 3대 경마대회인 켄터키더비, 프리크니스, 벨몬트 경마대회에서 우승하는 것을 가리키는 말로 쓰이게 됐다.

    경마가 엔터테인먼트적인 성격이 강하다면, 승마는 스포츠적인 면이 강하다. 승마는 말을 타고 장애물을 넘거나 규정된 종목 연기를 통해 점수를 겨루는 스포츠다. 고대 승마는 주로 문명의 발생지에서 발달했다.

    기록을 보면 유럽에서 승마를 시작한 것은 그리스인이 최초이며, 기원전 680년 제25회 고대 올림픽에 등장한 4두 마차경주가 운동경기에 출현한 최초의 승마라 할 수 있다. 유럽에서 승마는 일부 귀족의 스포츠로 성행했지만, 차츰 단순한 근대 스포츠의 승마로 발전했고, 1912년 세계 승마계를 통합하는 단체로 국제마술연맹이 파리에서 창립됐다. 올림픽 종목으로는 제2회 파리 올림픽부터 정식종목으로 채택돼 현재에 이르고 있다.

    승마는 개인이 하는 운동으로 기승자의 힘을 많이 필요로 하지 않기 때문에 남녀노소를 불문하고 쉽게 접할 수 있는 스포츠다. 개인의 체력에 맞게 적절한 조절이 가능해 심장병 등의 재활치료를 위한 운동으로도 적합하다. 이 같은 성격에 맞춰 최근에는 재활승마라고 해 상당한 치료효과를 거두기도 한다.

    말 산업과 직간접으로 인연을 맺고 있는 유명인

    해외에서 경마는 ‘Sports of Kings’ 혹은 ‘King of Sports’라 불렸다. 현재도 많은 저명인사들이 말 산업과 직간접적으로 연관돼 있다.

    경마와 승마의 대중화도 말 산업이 일반에 많이 익숙해졌지만, 말 산업을 이끄는 계층은 여전히 부유층이 많다. 세계 유수의 명품 브랜드인 에르메스, 구찌, 페라가모, 버버리 등의 명품 기업들은 사실 마구(馬具)와 관련된 상품을 제작하고 판매하는 사업에서 출발했다.

    명품 브랜드를 가진 기업들은 지금도 그 전통을 계승해 로고나 브랜드에 말 또는 마구와 관련된 상징을 사용하고 있다. 에르메스나 구찌는 말의 재갈을 형상화한 장식물을 구두나 벨트에 사용하고 있으며, 버버리는 로고 자체에 말을 포함하고 있다.

    세계 유명인들 중에는 현재에도 경마나 승마뿐만 아니라 목장 운영 등을 통해 직간접적으로 말 산업에 참여하고 있다. 대표적으로 영국 여왕인 ‘엘리자베스 2세’는 말을 생산하는 목장을 보유하고 있으며, 자신의 말을 경주에 출전시키는 마주이기도 하다.

    두바이의 왕족 그룹이자 에미레이트항공, 에미레이트그룹, 두바이 홀딩컴퍼니 등을 소유한 알 막툼 가문은 전 세계 유명 경주마를 싹쓸이하는 큰손으로 세계 곳곳에 종마목장을 보유하며 세계 경마계를 주름잡고 있다.

    영국 로열 에스코트는 19세기 초만 해도 일반인은 관람조차 할 수 없던 경마대회였다. 미국과 유럽의 말 산업은 이처럼 경마를 중심으로 성장해왔다.

    막툼 가문은 경마뿐 아니라 승마에도 영향력을 미치는데 아랍 말의 우수성을 알리고자 승마종목 중 하나인 ‘지구력 경기(Enduarance)’에 직접 선수로 출전하기도 한다. 또한 두바이 국왕인 셰이크 모하메드 알 막툼의 부인이자 요르단 공주인 하야 공주는 현재 세계승마협회(World Equestrian Federation) 회장이다.

    유명인들 중에도 많은 마주들이 있다. 영화 와 <쉰들러 리스트> 등으로 유명한 스티븐 스필버그 감독은 한때 경주마의 마주였으며, 맨체스터 유나이티드 감독 알렉스 퍼거슨은 2002년 유럽 챔피언 3세마이자 현재 유명 씨수말로 활동하고 있는 록 오브 지브랄타(Rock of Gibralta)의 공동마주로 참여하기도 했다. 뮤지션으로는 롤링스톤즈의 기타리스트인 루니 우드가 아일랜드에 말 목장을 가지고 있으며 경주마의 마주로도 활동하고 있다.

    이밖에도 많은 기업인들과 유명인들이 미국의 켄터키나 유럽의 유명 목장 경영에 직간접적으로 참여하고 있다. 이들의 투자 없이는 유명 목장들이 운영되기 어렵다는 소리도 나오고 있다.

    국내에서도 삼성그룹이 승마장과 승마단을 운영하고 있으며, 유럽의 유명 승마대회의 메인 스폰서로 활동하고 있다. 한화그룹도 승마장을 직접 운영하고 그룹의 총수인 김승연 회장의 자제가 승마 국가대표로 아시안게임에서 금메달을 따기도 했다. 또한 현대그룹을 포함해 많은 기업인들과 가족들이 승마선수 또는 승마를 취미로 즐기고 있다.
